Social Issue/Problem
People with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) are at up to 9 times higher risk of premature death by suicide. Around 60% of autism have a mental health comorbidity. Further 70% of people with autism and 40% with an intellectual disability experience mental ill-health. In the Hinkler region, there are approximately 2000 NDIS participants with autism with many more undiagnosed or still awaiting to access the NDIS.
Solution
Let’s Talk will deliver a series of supports to people with disabilities, their families & carers, and professionals who interact with them with the aim of increasing knowledge and skills in key topics including suicide prevention training and the NDIS code of conduct and human rights. Peer led groups will also be delivered fortnightly for people with disabilities and their families.
