Community Challenge
The Youth Mentoring Program (YMP) is a school-based, early intervention program supporting young people 7 to 17 years old who are having difficulties at school and are at risk of disengaging with the education system.
How This Project Works
The YMP program provides one-on-one mentoring, and in some cases, classroom mentoring at some schools. Mentoring support is provided and individually formulated to the needs of the mentee with guidance from the school, discussions between the Mentor, Mentee and YMP staff.
Summary
Youth Mentoring aims to assist young people to fully participate in the community in positive, constructive and respectful ways by providing youth with support and guidance through planned relationships with positive adult role models. Youth Mentors support young people by being a confidential person who can listen to issues and concerns, help with self-development activities that build self-confidence and self-esteem, support the young person to recognize strengths and talents and develop these, assist with goal setting, and are a positive role model and influence in the young person’s life.
